Mavroula, RIP…

A few words from Mavroula’s foster home:
“Today, sadly we decided, after the opinions of 4 vets that the kindest thing for Mavroulla was euthanasia. This is not a decision taken lightly. We have spent the last 6 weeks caring for her, treating her and hoping for improvement.
Unfortunately the injuries which, at the beginning we believed treatable proved more severe and as she was not recovering as well as expected we took her for another opinion. As we know this vet never gives up hope until there is no hope left, we had to respect his opinion today.
We considered the possibility of her travelling to another country to be cared for, but not healed for the rest of her life.
As she was incontinent, she required constant cleaning, her walking was a strange lurching, ending in collapse and her rear end was emaciated. Having cared for her for 6 weeks it was an extremely difficult decision to make but we feel that this was the only humane alternative for Mavroulla.
For those of you who do not agree with us I would ask you to consider if it was yourself, lying seriously injured, unable to control your bodily functions and relying on someone to empty your bladder, wash you constantly trying to keep you free of wounds, for the rest of your abnormal life, what would you choose?” If you have any questions, please contact CAWG via info@CretanAnimalWelfare.org

Working on quarantine! Φτιάχνοντας την καραντίνα!

The Heraklion Municipal Shelter is in desperate need of a quarantine area! Dedicated CAWG volunteers started work recently in order to close an opening between the wall and ceiling and soon will start work on the floor!

All the work is voluntary but we need funds for the materials and the transport – if you can help us build a better future for the strays of Heraklion area, please donate via Paypal or through our bank!

Το Κυνοκομείο Δήμου Ηρακλείου χρειάζεται οπωσδήποτε χώρο καραντίνας!

Εθελοντές της Φιλοζωικής Κρήτης ξεκίνησαν δουλειά έτσι ώστε να κλείσουν το άνοιγμα μεταξύ τοίχου και σκεπής και σύντομα θα ξεκινήσει η αλλαγή πατώματος! Η εργασία γίνεται από εθελοντές αλλά χρειαζόμαστε πόρους για τα υλικά και την μεταφορά – αν μπορείτε να μας βοηθήστε να χτίσουμε ένα καλύτερο αύριο για τα αδέσποτα του Ηρακλείου, παρα καλώ κάντε δωρεά μέσω Paypal ή με κατάθεση σε τράπεζα!

Everyone knows Choco… Όλοι γνωρίζουμε τον Τσόκο…

Yes, the chocolate Labrador type dog that pees up the sunbeds and impregnates any female within a 2 km radius!

No, we didn’t pretend he is a stray and take him to be neutered but we found the owner and had a chat to him. He is happy to pay and to get the dog neutered but he works long hours in the shop and can’t leave… Result? He will make an appointment with the vet in Stalis and one of our CAWG volunteers will do drop off and pick up of the dog!!! Hooray!!!

Ναι, το σοκολατί ημίαιμο Λαμπραντορ που κατουράει όλες τις ξαπλώστρες και αφήνει έγκυος κάθε θηλυκό σε ακτίνα 2χλ!

Όχι, δεν κάναμε πως είναι αδέσποτο για να το πάμε για στείρωση αλλά βρήκαμε τον ιδιοκτήτη και του μιλήσαμε. Ο ιδιοκτήτης θέλει να στειρώσει τον σκύλο αλλά δεν μπορεί να αφήσει καθόλου το μαγαζί του. Αποτέλεσμα; Θα κλείσει ραντεβού με τον κτηνίατρο στην Σταλίδα και κάποιος εθελοντής της Φιλοζωικής Κρήτης θα πάει και θα φέρει πίσω τον Τσόκο!

Ο Αργύρης μας… Our Argyris…

Αυτός ο κύριος περιφέρεται στα Μάλια από τον χειμώνα… όταν λοιπόν Σάββατο πρωί στις 7.50 τον είδα, σταμάτησα το αυτοκίνητο για να τον πιάσω ώστε να μπει στο πρόγραμμα στειρώσεων του Δήμου! Φοβισμένος, δεν ήθελε να πλησιάσει μέχρι που οι γιαγιάδες της γειτονιάς, χαιδεύοντας τον, τον κράτησαν αρκετή ώρα ώστε να του περάσω το λουρί και να μπούμε στο αυτοκίνητο!

Όταν ο Αργύρης επέστρεψε στην γειτονιά το ίδια βράδυ, τα εγγονάκια τον υποδέχτηκαν με χαρά και θα τον πρόσεχαν μέχρι να ξεζαλιστεί και να βγει και πάλι στο δρόμο!

This gentleman has been wandering around Malia since winter… so when I saw him on Saturday morning at 7.50,  I had to stop the car and try to catch him for the Municipality’s CNR program. Quite shy, he wouldn’t come too close to me but thankfully, the village ladies who care for him, stroked him long enough for me to put the lead around his neck and get him in the car!

When Argyris came back the same evening, the little grandchildren greeted him with joy and promised to look after him until the dizziness had faded and he could go out again!

Στειρώσεις Δήμου Χερσονήσου! Hersonisos CNR Programme!

Όπως γνωρίζετε, οι στειρώσεις αδέσποτων σκύλων από τον Δήμο Χερσονήσου έφθασαν σε αίσιο τέλος για τα Μάλια το Σάββατο 7 Ιουλίου, με την στείρωση συνολικά 10 αδέσποτων σκυλιών! Σύντομα αρχίζουν τις 10 στειρώσεις από περιοχή Γουβών και άλλες 5 από την Χερσόνησο!

As you know, the stray dog CNR from Hersonisos Municipality came to an end for Malia on Saturday 7th July, with 10 dogs having been neutered! They are now continuing the CNR with 10 more from Gouves area and 5 from Hersonisos!

Οι τοπικές αρχές, οι συνεργαζόμενοι κτηνίατροι αλλά και οι πολίτες φέρθηκαν άψογα στην συνεργασία μας αυτή και βοήθησαν στα επιτυχή αποτελέσματα που τώρα έχουμε! Ευχαριστούμε!

The local authorities, the cooperating vets and the citizens all offered their best services and help in making the results such a success! Thank you!

This has been a responsibility of local authorities since 2003 and we, the citizens/visitors/business owners, would like to finally see that action is being taken to ensure that animal welfare standards are met and public health & safety are not put at risk.

Παρόλο που κατανοούμε τις δυσκολίες που περνάει η Ελλάδα, δεν μπορούμε να καταλάβουμε γιατί ο Δήμος σας έχει ανατρέψει την απόφαση του για επένδυση στην επίλυση του προβλήματος των αδέσποτων σκύλων μέσω της στείρωσης, την διαπαιδαγώγησης, της ενημέρωσης και της εφαρμογής του νόμου.




Αυτές είναι οι ευθύνες των τοπικών αρχών από το 2003 κι εμείς, οι πολίτες/επισκέπτες/επιχειρηματίες, θα θέλαμε να δούμε επιτέλους κάποιες δράσεις με στόχο την επίτευξη ευημερίας των ζώων αλλά και την διατήρηση της δημόσιας υγείας και ασφάλειας.




Ελπίζουμε σύντομα το πρόγραμμα σας να βαλθεί σε λειτουργία!

Ο Δήμος Χερσονήσου εν δράση!

Municipality of  Hersonisos soon starting CNR of stray dogs as part of a long term plan to run humane education, raise awareness of dog owners, actively engage in law enforcement and create a temporary shelter!


Είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να σας ανακοινώσουμε  ότι σύντομα ο Δήμος Χερσονήσου θα υπογράψει σύμβαση με κτηνίατρο της περιοχής για την περισυλλογή, στείρωση και επανατοποθέτηση των αδέσποτων σκύλων!


Η κίνηση αυτή είναι μόνο η αρχή ενός προγράμματος που σκοπό έχει να επεκταθεί σε ενημερώσεις ιδιοκτητών, εφαρμογή του νόμου, σχολικές παρουσιάσεις και δημιουργία κυνοκομείου.




Θα θέλαμε να ευχαριστήσουμε όσους βοήθησαν ώστε να γίνει εφικτό το πρόγραμμα αυτό και να ζητήσουμε από όλους τους ιδιοκτήτες ζώων την απαιτούμενη υπευθυνότητα (περίπατος μόνο με λουρί, στείρωση και μικροτσιπ, καθαρισμός περιττωμάτων κτλ).

Was Sasa poisoned?! I don’t think so…

In the run up to the Olympics of Athens in 2004, most media, foreign and Greek, were portraying the Greek officials as monsters who were preparing to exterminate all the stray animals…


This of course did not happen, otherwise, chubby old Sasa would no longer be with us. I befriended her in 2003 in Heraklion center. A tall, lanky and playful girl full of joy! She disappeared from the streets before the Games came to town but soon after, reappeared happy, healthy and with no signs of having been poisoned!




This is Sasa now, so many years later, sitting outside the Municipal Building where I attend meetings regarding the shelter so that even more dogs can be neutered, vaccinated and if not adopted, released again.


She is overweight because she gets fed by everyone and there is also a lady in town who cares for her and her other furry friend (as well as cats) and invites them into the building to sleep on cold winter nights!


So if you see Sasa wobbling around town, be assured that they have been, and still are, doing the best they can for the strays!
