Still making the rounds…

We moved on to Barbara’s sanctuary in Messara where she currently has 8 donkeys, dogs, cats and various birds! We drove on to Melambes, an area with many donkeys who were unfortunately all out in the fields. By sitting in the local kafeneion we got talking to the locals and one who was particularly interested [...]

Krotos and Vagiona…

Our friend in Krotos (the lady who will never get married!) was unfortunately in Athens, staying with her brother as she had broken her leg shortly before our visit. The person left to temporarily care for her donkey willingly took us to it! This brown donkey, was another one we had to visit alone… the [...]

Pako is here!

Rotasi…

In Rotasi we met this lady who lives on her own since her husband died. She has a beautiful vegetable garden and animals, all of which she maintains herself in order to provide her family (children and grandchildren) who live in Heraklion with local food. The goats hooves were in an appalling state, so bad [...]

Lassithi Part 2!

Despite the warm reception in Lassithi and seeing our regulars once more, it was sad to realise that about 6 donkeys had died since our last visit in May. This gentleman’s donkey was one of those which had died this summer and he took this little one from another village, one we had been looking [...]

Starting in Lassithi area as usual!

First of all we must visit our beloved elderly couple who always offer us bowls of walnuts and apples! Their donkey and goat were there in the yard and little stable, waiting for us to help them! After this lovely welcoming, we carried on to other villages within the Lassithi Plateau… And then, the curious [...]
